Moving can take emotional toll

September 8, 2010 - Relocating for many people can be an emotional process, and not only because of the stress of the actual moving process.

Many people develop emotional attachments to their old homes, and that can make it difficult for them to even consider relocating, reported the Miami Herald. Families can make lasting memories in a home, and sometimes the actual building becomes a sort of touchstone for those memories, mental health professional Ruth Geller told the paper.

The expert cautioned that homeowners shouldn't ignore their emotional attachment to a home, but they should recognize that the memories are more important than the actual building.

"Memories are something that you keep inside a house," she told the paper. "Aside from a sentimental association, [a house is] bricks and mortar or wood. You can leave the house, but you can keep the memories."

Another expert, Linda Lavin, added that it is important for families to avoid getting caught up in the past and look forward to their next destination. Some of moving's scariest elements can be eliminated if a person is able to make themselves excited about their new home.

If not handled well, stress can weigh heavily on a family's relocation and make the process more difficult. They can simplify things by staying prepared and making important arrangements - like hiring a moving company - well ahead of time.
