Charleston County schools to relocate while new facilities are built

August 11, 2010 - The Charleston County School District in South Carolina is relocating five elementary schools this fall while new school facilities are built.

Students will be housed in alternative locations while their existing schools - deemed unsafe in the event of an earthquake - are demolished and rebuilt.

"We believe in under promising and over delivering," school board member Ruth Johnson told Charleston’s WCSC-TV Channel 5. "We know that they will all be back in their new schools in three years, but we're hoping somewhere like two and a half years."

The school district has been planning the temporary shift, and will provide transportation for students. District officials are considering a "pick-up" site at the original school locations to avoid inconveniencing parents.

Staff members have been working six days a week this summer to assure classrooms are ready, the station reported.

The first day of school is August 18, and the schools will have an open house for parents to inspect the temporary sites before students return to class.

Charleston County is home to about 330,000 residents and families, and 28 percent of households have school-age children.
