Brooklyn College students moving into new residence hall

September 3, 2010 - Incoming freshman at Brooklyn College will the the first in the school's history to live on campus.

Traditionally a commuter school, the Flatbush-based college recently finished construction on a brand new residence hall on Farragut Road, reported the New York Daily News. The eight-story building was constructed for $4.1 million and is expected to house 280 residents on a location about two blocks from campus.

Students are now moving into the new residence hall and are already making themselves at home in the Brooklyn neighborhood, patronizing local restaurants like Crown Fried Chicken and DiFari Pizza and introducing themselves to the locals.

Neighborhood residents told the Daily News that they welcome the college students, pleased that some new energy will be moving into the area.

"I think [the dorm] is great," local resident Kevin Goodridge told the Daily News. "This neighborhood is turning into something beautiful."

Students are moving into school all around the country as college season kicks into gear. The Insurance Information Institute suggests that parents take extra care to prepare their children for the big move, which could include checking their homeowners or renters insurance to ensure that their children's possessions are covered when they move into a dorm.
