Architects: Home designs will become smaller, simpler

March 10, 2010 - Homeowners and renters who are considering moving may notice that newer houses and apartments now feature more modest designs, as a recent research suggests that many contractors are receiving requests for functional rather than flashy homes.

A new survey from the American Institutes of Architects (AIA) suggests that many recently built homes were design with energy efficiency and accessibility in mind, particularly in kitchens and bathrooms.

Kermit Baker, a chief economist for AIA, said that these findings indicate that "homeowners are moving away from glitzy features such as steam showers and towel warming drawers/racks, and instead looking for water-saving toilets, radiant heated flooring and LED lighting options to manage utility costs."

These results may also suggest that the residential real estate market is on its way to recovery, as a preference for cost-efficient and accessible houses could inspire homeowners to launch home repair and maintenance projects.

Homeowners who chose to make these alterations to their homes may be able eligible to receive tax rebates through the government's proposed Homestar plan. Initiatives that could qualify these individuals for refunds may include installing more eco-friendly water heaters, insulation, duct sealing and new roofing or doors, news channel WAFF reports.
