Who is AMSA?

Established in 1936, the American Moving and Storage Association is a non profit trade association based out of Washington D.C. With more than 3,500 professional mover members, AMSA is dedicated to making your move successful every step of the way. AMSA moving company members are professional movers moving interstate household goods (between states). In addition, these companies may provide intrastate and local moving services as well as storage in a warehouse. AMSA represents all facets of the moving and the storage industry: van lines, agents, independent movers, forwarders, international movers, auto transporters, suppliers and others.

AMSA carefully screens its mover members, ensuring that consumers are matched to movers who have met all licensing and insurance requirements, and providing for arbitration of disputes between consumers and movers through its "Household Goods Dispute Settlement Program." One of AMS''s goals is a well-informed public that better understands the value of professional moving service.

The American Moving and Storage Association is a member-driven and offers a complete range of services to its members.

AMSA members transport between 1.3 and 1.5 million households each year.

Laredo, Texas

Laredo, Texas is a great moving destination that is built around its central plaza in the fashion of Spanish cities. The streets are built in a grid system with barrios or neighborhoods developing outside the center of town.  By the 1880s, Laredo was a major conduit for trade between the U.S. and Mexico and it remains so today. Over 233,000 residents call Laredo home, including actor Thomas Haden Church.  It is currently one of the fastest growing cities in the country. Laredo is situated on the Rio Grande and is located on the border of the U.S. and Mexico.

Economy:
The city of Laredo has a variety of employment opportunities. More residents are employed in the trade, transportation and utility industries than in any other sectors. Laredo is currently experiencing positive job growth.  This uptick is largely due to the expansion of international trade in 2007 to the North American Free Trade Agreement. Laredo’s unemployment rate is slightly higher than the Texas state average, but the jobless rate has decreased dramatically since the 1990s.

Tourism:
There is a huge annual celebration in honor of President George Washington’s birthday.  There are many fun events associated with this event, which takes place in February and includes a Jalapeno Festival, a Princess Pocahontas Pageant, an air show and two parades.  Any time throughout the year, you can take the historical trolley tour which begins and ends at the Republic of the Rio Grande Museum.  Perhaps you’d enjoy hearing the Laredo Philharmonic Orchestra perform.  For some real family fun, check out the Nuevo Santander Children’s Museum.

History:
Spanish Captain Tomas Sanchez and three other families founded Laredo on May 16, 1755. The first lucrative industry of the town was ranching and herding cattle. In 1821, when Mexico became independent from Spain, Laredo became a Mexican city. The cattle industry paved the way for the start of the trade industry for Laredo, as it enabled the workers to trade both wool and animal hides with Mexico for important household items and food.  By 1881, railroads came rolling into Laredo allowing the city to grow and thrive and earn its nickname as the “Gateway City” between the U.S. and Mexico. The population also tripled during this decade. On December 5, 1889 streetcar service came to Laredo. This development led to a wave of residential construction.
