Victoria, Texas

Also popularly known as “The Crossroads,” Victoria is located in Texas, 30 miles inland from the Gulf of Mexico. The city serves as the regional hub for seven counties, an area collectively known as the “Golden Crescent.” The city is rich in Texan history and has a deep heritage. It is the oldest city in Texas and is the only city to fly all six flags of the state. Victoria has very family friendly neighborhoods and is recommended as a place to raise a family. Economy:
Victoria is the economic hub of the Golden Crescent area which serves a community of more than 250,000 people. Being the oldest settlement in Texas, Victoria has a very stable economy that has significant contributions from a number of industrial sectors. Education, retail, agriculture, healthcare and manufacturing are all important players. Victoria is a prime location for companies doing business with foreign countries because of the efficient transport infrastructure. The Victoria Regional Airport provides, the shallow water Port of Victoria and the deep water Port of Lavaca are important assets to the manufacturing companies in the city. The tremendous business potential in the area attracts many people into moving to the Golden Crescent area. Moving companies in Texas hence have successful business here.

History:
The French built the first fort here in 1685, known as Fort Saint Louis. Till 1689 it remained the main European presence in the area. The Spanish established their mission in the area in 1722; it was aimed at securing the Texan coastline from the French. In the struggle for dominance, neither the French nor the Spanish were successful. The area had no evident future until the scenario was changed by Martin De Leon in 1805. At this time there was a lot happening in the country. The United States had got its freedom, the French monarchy was overthrown and Spain was losing its control over Mexico. The authorities granted De Leon to establish a settlement by the name of Nuestra De Guadalupe De Victoria. The name was shortened when Texas got its Independence and incorporated the city as “Victoria” in 1839. Although it is the second-oldest incorporated city, Victoria is the oldest settlement in Texas. In 1958, it was the location of the Foster Air Force Base before it was decommissioned.

Tourism:
Victoria is rich in history and has numerous historic sites and several museums. The popular ones include the Nave Museum, McNamara House Museum and the Children’s Discovery Museum. Victoria also has a number of parks for outdoor recreation. There are opportunities for fishing, biking, hiking and camping at the Riverside Park and the Goliad State Park. One of the most famous places is the Texas Zoo. It is the first destination on the list for many of the tourists here, especially those with children. Many people also come here for the annual festivals like Czech Heritage Festival, the Jazz Festival and the Black History Festival.
