History:
Tulsa, Oklahoma was incorporated in 1898. With the discovery of oil in nearby Red Fork, the city grew quickly, reaching a population of over 7,000 by the time of Oklahoma statehood in 1907. By 1920, Tulsa had earned the title, "Oil Capital of the World." Not all was success in the early days of Tulsa. During the 1920s, it had become evident that the Arkansas River was no longer a fitting water supply. Citizens of Tulsa supported a multimillion-dollar bond to bring water from the Spavinaw Hills. This was considered one of the largest public works projects in the country during this era.  It was not until after World War II that an boost in offshore drilling operations affected the petroleum industry. Fortunately, the aircraft and aerospace industry was beginning to blossom. American Airlines built a major maintenance center and SABRE reservation system relocated from New York to Tulsa. Today, there are over 300 aviation-related companies in Tulsa. Another means of transportation did not come to Tulsa until 1970, when the Tulsa Port of Catoosa opened. This linked Tulsa with the rest of the world via river navigation to the Mississippi River and the Gulf of Mexico.

Economy:
Tulsa's central location in the U.S. makes it an attractive place to engage in nearly any type of business, from telecommunications and service-oriented industries to manufacturing to retail. Operating costs commonly run well below the national average. According to a 2004 study by Forbes magazine, the Tulsa metropolitan area ranks as the third lowest metro area as far as cost-of-living in the country. Tulsa was considered the "Oil Capital of the World" from the early 1920s until World War II. By the time the companies moved operations closer to offshore production sites, Tulsa had begun to develop its aircraft and aerospace industry, which is now the region's leading industry. Today, Tulsa has over 300 aviation-related companies, adding to the more than 30,000 Tulsa, Oklahoma jobs and more than 140,000 jobs statewide in aviation. The industry brings in close to $1 billion in annual payroll and contributes an additional $3.3 billion annually to the area. In addition, two insurance companies contribute to the area’s economy, as are major manufacturers such as Ford Glass and Whirlpool. Three car rental companies has their headquarters in the city.

Telecommunications is also a major industry, employing about 15,000 people annually. In the early 1970s, Tulsa opened the Tulsa Port of Catoosa on the Verdigris River, thus becoming a major inland port along the 445-mile McClellan-Kerr Navigation System. The port provides inexpensive shipping for such products as coal, oil, grain and fertilizer to the Mississippi River, and from there on to the Great Lakes or the Gulf of Mexico and around the world.
