Wichita, Kansas

Wichita, Kansas has seen a steady growth in population in the past two decades. What makes relocating to Wichita so attractive? It helps that the city has a low cost of living and short average commute times. Another reason for moving to Wichita is its strong manufacturing capability, which has created many high-paying jobs. This capacity is likely to continue into the future; the city of Wichita is dedicated to education, beating the national average in its rate of high school graduation and its per-capita spending on job training.
But cold facts like these don’t capture the real reason that keeps Wichita moving companies busy. Wichita is a vibrant town with an Old West history and a strong entrepreneurial spirit. It has a thriving arts and cultural center, and its small size means that the city’s center is just a short drive from beautiful prairies and farms.

Economy:
As mentioned before, manufacturing makes up a large sector of the Wichita economy. The avionics industry is particularly important; many say that the city’s fortunes are tied to the market for planes and jets. There are, however, many other goods manufactured in Wichita. These include chlorinated solvents, outdoor recreational gear, meat products, amusement park rides and household appliances. The health care industry is also a major source of revenue for Wichita residents. Because demand for health care rarely fluctuates, this has been a stabilizing factor in the local economy.

History:
The junction of the Arkansas River and the Little Arkansas River was a popular trading place long before it grew up into the city of Wichita. Before Europeans settled the American west, a group of Native Americans called the Wichita met there to exchange goods. In 1868, a man named J. R. Reed followed their example and built a trading post where the two rivers joined. The outpost grew quickly; it was an incorporated town by 1870 and had its own newspaper (the Wichita City Eagle) by 1872.

Wichita’s rapid growth was due to a man named Jesse Chisolm, a hunter who marked the Chisolm Trail. The trail ran through Wichita, and cowboys soon began using it to drive hundreds of thousands of cattle to the town for boarding onto the Sante Fe RailRoad. In those days, the town was rough-and-tumble. Legendary westerners walked its streets, including Wyatt Earp, “Buffalo” Bill and Bat Masterson. The town fell on hard times in the 1870s as ranchers took their cattle to new rail lines that had been built further west, but it soon rebounded as a center for agriculture and manufacturing. Wichita also became a center for early aviation, with entrepreneurs such as Clyde Cessna and William Lear founding the companies that today make Wichita the “Air Capital of the World.”

Tourism:
Wichita’s exciting and vital history sets it apart from other cities, so any visit must include a stop at the Wichita-Sedgwick County Historical Museum. Exhibits at the museum encompass a variety of interesting and exciting characters from Wichita’s past, including the Native Americans, the cowboys, the powerful oil barons, the daring aviators and the hard-pressed Dust Bowl farmers.

Another worthy attraction in Wichita is the newly-renovated Orpheum Theater, a historic building that hosts a wide range of visiting and local musicians. The Old Town District also offers a variety of nightclubs and sports bars, with something to tempt every taste. Nearby Delano offers a more low-key atmosphere, with outdoor seating areas that allow patrons to relax to live music.

For daytime entertainment, be sure to take a bicycle ride on one of the many local bike paths, one of which follows the original Chisolm Trail. The city also boasts some of the nicest golf courses in the Midwest, with more than 35 public and private clubs in the greater metropolitan area. For those who prefer spectator sports, Wichita offers racing, hockey, football, baseball and basketball.

Interesting Facts:

• In 1872, at the height of the wildest years of the Wild West, a sign was erected at the city limits proclaiming that “Everything Goes in Wichita.”
• To lure more settlers into moving cross-country to Wichita, early entrepreneurs advertised the city as “The Peerless Princess of the Plains.
