Who is AMSA?

Established in 1936, the American Moving and Storage Association is a non profit trade association based out of Washington D.C. With more than 3,500 professional mover members, AMSA is dedicated to making your move successful every step of the way. AMSA moving company members are professional movers moving interstate household goods (between states). In addition, these companies may provide intrastate and local moving services as well as storage in a warehouse. AMSA represents all facets of the moving and the storage industry: van lines, agents, independent movers, forwarders, international movers, auto transporters, suppliers and others.

AMSA carefully screens its mover members, ensuring that consumers are matched to movers who have met all licensing and insurance requirements, and providing for arbitration of disputes between consumers and movers through its "Household Goods Dispute Settlement Program." One of AMS''s goals is a well-informed public that better understands the value of professional moving service.

The American Moving and Storage Association is a member-driven and offers a complete range of services to its members.

AMSA members transport between 1.3 and 1.5 million households each year.

History:
Lawrence had a fascinating and bloody beginning. Founded by Charles Robinson in 1854, this city was named after Amos Adam Lawrence, a prominent politician and antislavery figure. During the “Bleeding Kansas” era Amos Lawrence was to feature at the very center of anti-slavery sentiment. Matters came to a head when in May 1856 a pro-slavery posse entered the then small town of Lawrence and set about sacking and looting it before burning it down. In revenge, abolitionist John Brown staged the Pottawatomie Massacre on the night of May 25th, 1856 or four days after the sacking of the town. This reprisal did not go unanswered – on August 21st, 1863 Confederate guerillas under the leadership of one William Quantrill again razed Lawrence this time killing around 200 local men. Fortunately matters settled down after the American Civil War. In 1865 the University of Kansas opened in Lawrence and so the place became a college town noted for its liberal philosophy and distinctive culture. The other controversy that Lawrence was associated with was the television movie The Day After a Sc-Fi movie that depicted what life would be like in the City of Lawrence after a nuclear strike from a member of the Warsaw pact. The movie was filmed entirely on location in the Lawrence/Kansas City regions in 1983.

Economy:
The University of Kansas is by far the largest employer in Lawrence, Douglas County clocking in with almost 10,000 employees. Then follows information services company Vangent (1,500 employees) and the City of Lawrence (1,431). Hallmark Cards have a large presence in Lawrence too with just over 800 employees. Another 21 companies employ from 150 employees up to the 700 mark making up the top 25 employers in Lawrence. Median household income was just short of $40,000 in 2009 and the median resident age is a youthful 25.3 years compared to 35.3 in Kansas overall.

Tourism:
Lawrence claims to be a City bustling with action. If you like rail travel then you should take the 20-mile Midland Railway trip, it is sure to be fun for the kids. Then there is a downtown walk through historic Massachusetts Street – loads of shops and restaurants await you. For the more energetic there are parks and trails – but spare some time to visit the museums and art galleries too. There is plenty of live music on offer as well, just check out the Lawrence Convention and Visitor website. Some of the local cemeteries are well worth visiting from a historical perspective, with some well known names in “residence”.

Colleges/Universities:
