Capital City: The capital of Maryland is Annapolis.

Population: There are approximately 5.7 million people who reside in Maryland.

Local Activities: No matter where you begin, you will quickly discover that Maryland is home to an amazing range of arts and cultural offerings. You can sail the waters of our Chesapeake Bay, first charted by legendary explorer Captain John Smith, or try surfing, fishing or boating on some of the more than 4,000 miles of Maryland coastline. Check out the National Aquarium in Baltimore, Maryland. One of the most popular attractions in the state, the Baltimore National Aquarium features an intentional and carefully planned design. This interactive aquarium allows visitors numerous hands-on learning opportunities, and a petting pool. If art is your calling, the Baltimore Museum of Art was established with a single piece of art in 1914, the Baltimore museum now holds over 90,000 pieces spanning over many thousands of years. The Baltimore Museum of Art's contemporary art collection includes works by Picasso, Monet, Cézanne, Gauguin and Van Gogh, and includes the world's largest holding of artwork by Henri Matisse. The US Naval Academy in Annapolis, makes every trip complete. Enjoy strolling through the beautiful grounds of this historic college founded in 1845. Though visitors should call ahead for entrance restrictions, guided tours are available.

Economy: Economically, Maryland continues to offer vast opportunity to its residence, while being home to some of the country's richest families. Its gross state product of $257 billion and median household income of approximately $68,000 make Maryland the wealthiest state in the country. With two of Maryland's counties ranking third and seventh in wealthiest counties in the nation, per capita personal income at $43,500 (fifth in the nation) and the lowest state poverty rate in the country, Maryland's thriving economy is the state's foundation for the future. Commercial fishing is a large component of the states large food-production sector. The largest catches by species are the blue crab, oysters and striped bass.

State Bird: The state bird is the Baltimore oriole.

State Tree: The state tree is the white oak (Quercus alba).

State Flower: The Black-Eyed Susan has been the official flower of Maryland since 1918.

State Song: "Maryland, My Maryland" is the state song. It was written by James Ryder Randall.
