Fort Wayne, Indiana

What do you need to know about Fort Wayne if you’re moving cross-country and looking for a place to settle? To begin with, this is a town that goes out of its way to welcome people who are moving to Fort Wayne. They even have a Visitor’s Bureau, which offers brochures and advice to prospective residents.

But before you start looking for Fort Wayne on a map (or searching for Fort Wayne moving companies), take a moment to find out what makes this town so charming.

One of the best things about Fort Wayne is its small-town feel. This is a city that loves baseball, but it still has a place in its heart for the arts. Although it has a thriving night life, it’s also very welcoming to families, and the local economy offers a wide range of blue-collar and white-collar jobs.

Economy:
Health care is the most important industry in Fort Wayne, and the city’s two health care networks are among the top five local employers. Although service industries such as insurance companies are becoming more important to the local economy, manufacturing still plays a key role; the percentage of manufacturing jobs in Fort Wayne is twice the national average. General Motors has a 2.5 million square-foot-plant located in the city, and other products manufactured in the area include bags designed Vera Bradley and fine chocolates from DeBrand.

History:
In 1794, General “Mad” Anthony Wayne built Fort Wayne at the confluence of three rivers: the St. James, the Maumee and the St. Marys. The fort became an important trading post, especially after the completion of the Erie Canal made trade by water an integral part of the local economy.

One of the most famous residents of Fort Wayne was John Chapman, who is known today as Johnny Appleseed. Chapman wasn’t just a hobo throwing seeds around; he was known as an excellent gardener who helped to establish orchards throughout the United States. The town of Fort Worth hosts an annual celebration in Chapman’s honor; the festival is held in Johnny Appleseed Park. Some say that Chapman is buried in the park, but most historians believe that this is only a legend.

Tourism:
No trip to Fort Wayne would be complete without a visit to Parkview Field, which is one of the best minor-league baseball stadiums in the United States. In fact, Fort Wayne can rightfully call itself one of baseball’s home towns; the first ever professional baseball game took place in Fort Wayne on May 4, 1871. The score was two to zero, with the Fort Wayne Kekiongas defeating the Cleveland Forrest Citys.

Fort Wayne offers a great experience for families, beginning with the Children’s Zoo, which has been voted one of the best zoos in America. The grounds cover 38 acres, with an Indonesian Rain Forest, an African Safari, an orangutan habitat and a shark tank.

Even if you haven’t brought your family with you, your visit to Fort Wayne can still be a “family experience” if you visit the famous Genealogy Center at the Allen County Public Library. The library houses the largest public genealogy collection, with 590,000 microfilms, 370,000 printed books and military records from the 1700s.
