The major economic backbone of Champaign is agriculture. The universities in the area are also major employers of the citizens of Champaign.

In April 2011 The Christian Science Monitor rated Champaign-Urbana as one of the five most important cities responsible for the turnaround of its economy based on the creation of jobs, resulting from the city’s decline in unemployment figures (2.1%) and the creation of jobs.

Champaign is home to a large technology and software research and development sector, mainly housed in the city’s Research Park. Notable companies with facilities there include Yahoo, IBM, Intel, Wolfram Research, AMD, Amdocs, Instarecon, Power World, Phonak, Infobright and Volition Inc.
