All My Sons Moving & Storage of Milwaukee

Kenosha, Wisconsin

Being the fourth largest city in Wisconsin, and located on the western shore of Lake Michigan, don’t think moving to Kenosha means you’ll be living in the boondocks. It’s a vibrant city, experiencing growth due to its proximity to Chicago. It attracts many commuters from the Windy City, as well as Milwaukee. While mostly a heavily manufacturing industry, it was ranked in the Top 50 cities in Milken Institute's study of high-tech economies. The gateway to Wisconsin opens its doors to visitors and potential residents alike, and Kenosha moving companies are only happy to serve the former.

Economy:
The city is experiencing growth, and this is evident by the rise sharp in personal-income levels (compared to the drop in their neighboring cities.) It can be considered a commuter suburb, but they do have their own industries. Manufacturing, agriculture and service are big industries (as well as in most of Wisconsin). However, the public school system and University of Wisconsin, Parkside are the largest employers, and in the private sector, pharmaceutical company Abbot Laboratories of Chicago.

Tourism:
Lake Michigan’s shores are a big attraction to the city, and the number of visitors continues to increase each year. Water sports attract tourists to the beach, while there are over 30 parks and campground for outdoor activities. Harbor Park is another main attractions; a former industrial space turned into an urban oasis, with biking and walking paths, a museum, marina, residential condos, a streetcar line and plans for commercial establishments.
For shopaholics, Pleasant Prairie's Prime Outlets malls which has hundreds of stores and a wide variety of retail outlets is a big draw. Musuem buffs will be delighted at the brand new $15 million Civil War Museum, the Discovery Dinosaur Museum and the Kenosha Public Museum. For the young ones, there’s Action Territory for the boys (arcardes, lazer tag and go-karts) and for girls, the Bristol Renaissance Faire will make anyone feel like a princess. Kenosha can easily be reached via Interstate 94, and there are two intercity bus lines, as well as Amtrak’s Hiawatha Line. The closest airport is Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport.

History:
Originally the home of the Paleo Indians some 13,500 years ago, the first settlers came in the 1830s as part of the Western Emigration Company, along with John Bullen Jr. It was called gnozhé meaning “place of the pike” after the fish that was abundant in nearby rivers. The settlers started building the town on their own in 1835, and a school and churches popped up within a year. The town was renamed “Kenosha”, an anglicized version of the Native American name. The wave of immigrants moving to Kenosha (mostly from Italy, Ireland, Poland and Germany) were skilled artisans, and was a big influenced the city’s architecture and culture. During the industrial revolution, the town experienced a huge boom in manufacturing and is said to have produced millions of cars and trucks between 1902 and 1988, since many of the big automakers (such as Nash, Hudson, LaFayette and American Motors Corporation) set up shop in Kenosha.

Interesting Facts:

  • The two-mile streetcar system servicing downtown makes Kenosha one of the smallest cities in the U.S. with a streetcar system.
