Tyler, Texas

Tyler, Texas boasts the nickname of “The Rose Capital of the Nation” thanks to its magnificent rose garden, which just so happens to be America’s largest. Today, Tyler is one of the most popular destinations in the country for retirees. The word “quaint” springs to mind when describing Tyler, but make no mistake, if you are considering moving to Tyler we urge you to be well prepared and properly organized. Moving is potentially very stressful as you close old doors and open new ones, not knowing what awaits you. So why not check with our moving experts before finalizing your plans and then sit back and let us do the hard work for you.

History:
Smith County was created by the Texas Legislature in April 1846, which selected Tyler to be County Seat owing to its central locality. During the Civil War the city hosted the largest Confederate ordnance plant in Texas together with a large Confederate prisoner of war camp named Camp Ford. By 1877 some 21 miles of the Tyler Tap Railroad were commissioned, connecting Tyler to Ferguson where it linked to the Texas and the Pacific Railway. Cotton and corn were originally the main crops of the area, but fruit orchards became increasingly important and by 1900 there were more than one million fruit trees, mainly peach. Then the peach blight arrived which wiped out all the pioneering efforts. Many farmers turned to rose growing instead and this proved very successful thanks to the climate and soil. The Tyler Chamber of Commerce was incorporated in 1918 and the college and schooling systems quickly followed. With the discovery of the East Texas Oilfield in the 1930s, Tyler experienced a huge economic boom in the years that followed. By the 1960s Tyler was blossoming in other directions too and not depending just on oil. Today, it is a prosperous growing city, offering big city glitz and glamour while maintaining small-town charm.

Economy:
Tyler is famed for its magnificent roses and thanks to the incredibly fertile soil is also host to the headquarters of the Brookshire Grocery Company which operates in several counties under various brand names. Medical and health care are also prominent sectors of the local economy, while transportation, rail and education offer excellent employment opportunities, and also make vital contributions to the local economy too.

Tourism:
Tyler is a well-known destination made famous by the beautiful roses it grows so well. The city of Tyler Chamber of Commerce has an informative and helpful website to help you plan your visit and download all the events and attractions as well.
