Denton, Texas

Situated 36 miles north of Dallas and Fort Worth, Denton, Texas is an ideal moving destination. From the century-old courthouse and quaint town-square to excellent shopping and internationally acclaimed talent, Denton is the vibrant setting where these diverse worlds meet. Those relocating to Denton will discover ambiance, assets and amenities everywhere you turn.

History:
European settlement began in mid-19th century when William S. Peters of Kentucky obtained a land grant from the Texas Congress and named it Peters Colony. After initial settlement in the southeast area in 1843, the Texas legislature voted to form Denton County in 1846. The city expanded greatly as it became a strong agricultural trade center and manufacturing destination for mills and cottage industries. The creation of the Texas and Pacific Railway in 1881 gave Denton its first rail connection, and brought an influx of people to the area. Despite this, it did not develop into a strong manufacturing location, relying instead on agricultural workforces. In 1954, the regional office of the Federal Civil Defense Administration moved from Dallas to Denton, and a few years later a large underground shelter was completed. Denton grew rapidly from a population of 26,844 in 1960, to 48,063 in 1980. Its proximity to the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, directly connected via Interstate 35, played a major role in this growth. The opening of the DFW International Airport in 1974 led to a small spurt in population. In May 2006, United Equities, a Houston-based real estate company, which announced that several of the historic buildings would be demolished to accommodate a new mixed-use commercial center, purchased the 100-block of the historic Fry Street area. The proposal drew opposition from residents, who sought to preserve Fry Street as a historic and cultural icon for the city. After a new proposal by Dinerstein Cos, the city council approved the project in mid-2010.

Economy:
Denton is proud of its world-class workforce that creates the foundation of our industry successes. The Denton Independent School District prepares our youth with a curriculum that includes advanced technology, instruction and business/life skills for our continued growth and development as a community. The proximity to two major universities, the University of North Texas, Texas Women’s University and a junior college provide an ample and well-educated workforce that provides growth and productivity for our local businesses. Texas is a Right-to-Work State. According to the Texas Workforce Commission’s December 2007 labor estimates, the available workforce for the city of Denton was 60,338. Denton is fortunate to draw workers from the Dallas and Fort Worth Metropolitan Statistical Area representing 3.1 million people, as well as workers from the Oklahoma border. The Fort Worth area has traditionally been a diverse center of manufacturing, and the city had demonstrated strong economic growth since the 1980s. Forecasts call for an increase of manufacturing jobs, supplying 32,048 new manufacturing jobs between 2004 and 2025 for an annual growth rate of 1.2 percent. Government sector jobs are expected to show continued growth, and the transportation, communication, and utilities sector is forecasted to show growth as well. Major employers in the area are American Airlines, Lockheed Martin Tactical Aircraft Systems, Bell Helicopter Textron, Radio Shack Corporation, SABRE, Pier 1 Imports, and Burlington Northern Santa Fe. Emerging economic sectors in the new century include semiconductor manufacturing, communications equipment manufacturing, corporate offices, and distribution.

Tourism:
Start by heading over to Oakmont Country Club. This semi-private golf course plays at 6,900 years from its championship tees, and offers a challenge to both expert and higher handicap golfers as they play over 170 acres of rolling and hilly terrain. If you are getting hungry, Denton is home to hundreds of eating establishments ranging from fast food to fine dining, from outdoor cafes to bed and breakfasts, including cuisines such as Japanese, Greek, Chinese, Thai, Italian, Peruvian and more. Then, visible from most parts of the city is the iconic Courthouse Square, which defines much of Denton's architecture as well as its personality. Denton's Courthouse Square is not a faux tourist attraction, created as a quaint visitor photo-op. The Square is where it all happens: outdoor musicians, festivals, great shops and restaurants, and practically constant activity. Everything a town square used to be in 1896, it still is today in Denton.

Colleges/Universities:

Interesting Fact:

  • For a time Denton was home to the only FCDA underground shelter designated as the place from which the president of the United States and other federal officials would direct the country in case of attack.
