The French abandoned the fort in 1760 to the British who occupied the space during the Seven Years War. Erie, Pennsylvania also played a huge role in the War of 1812, when President James Madison charters a naval fleet be built on Lake Erie to perturb people trying to get in. Our winnings in the War of 1812 against the English helped our country gain control of the Great Lakes. After this time, Erie developed its rail system and became one of the most transportation hubs running materials and people to Erie.
