Although there is a hint of manufacturing and small scale agriculture but the main portions depend on education, healthcare and retail. Major employers in the city include the Prince George’s County Public Schools which hires 1,023 employees. The second largest employer is the healthcare provider MedAssurant that employs 700 people. Wal-Mart is also is also a major employer. The economy of Bowie also depends a lot on the economy of the surrounding cities as a large portion of the residents work out of station. The economic promise and opportunity that Bowie offers is a major attraction to the people who decide moving to Bowie.

History:
The history of Bowie begins somewhere around 1870 when a settlement sprung near a local stop at the Washington Railroad junction. In honour of a local resident, Governor Oden Bowie, the railroad station was named Bowie. The rest of the surrounding town was initially named Huntington. Huntington was incorporated as a town in 1874. The charter for Huntington was later amended and its name was changed to Bowie. In 1916, Bowie was incorporated as a city. It was re-incorporated in 1963 after the adjacent area of “Belair at Bowie” was annexed. Belair at Bowie was developed by a firm called Levitt and Sons on the former Estate of Belair. This land once used to be the plantation of Governor Samuel Ogle. Over the years the community of Bowie evolved from an agricultural town to become one of the best and largest cities in Maryland.

Tourism:
Bowie has a very interesting history and a very rich culture. The Belair Mansion is one of the must-visit places. It is a large beautiful five-part Georgian plantation house that has been restored to reflect its 250 year old image. Then there is the famous Belair Museum that is home of the Triple Crown winners Gallant Fox and Omaha as well as numerous other thoroughbreds. The museum has been restored and is open to the public. The Bowie Railroad Station and Huntington Museum have been relocated from their original sites across the tracks and restored. Both of these buildings reflect the origins of the city and its early years of growth. Visitors can stay at the Hampton Inn and the Comfort Inn.
