Naperville, Illinois

Nestled along the banks of the DuPage River, 30 miles west of Chicago, Naperville, Illinois, is home to approximately 145,000 people. Naperville consistently ranks as a top community in the nation to live, raise children and retire. Those moving to Naperville will also discover acclaimed schools, the best public library system in the country, an array of healthcare options and an exceptionally low crime rate - making it easy to see why so many people choose to call Naperville home.

History:
Naperville organized as a city in 1890 and had a population of 2,629 by 1900. Between 1890 and 1920, residents began receiving city services such as water, sewers, electricity and telephones. Naperville grew to 12,933 by 1960. While the suburban boom began in the near western suburbs after World War II, Naperville remained out of the range of this growth until 1954, when plans for the East-West toll road were announced. The route, which skirted the northern edge of Naperville and included an interchange, linked the city to downtown Chicago via the just completed Eisenhower Expressway. Because of this new access, residential, retail, industrial, and service industries boomed in and around Naperville. The city grew to 50 square miles in 1993, with a population of 128,358 in 2000.

Among municipalities in the metropolitan area, only Aurora and Chicago itself are larger. Many of the new enterprises attracted to the Naperville area were based in research and development. During the late 1950s and 1960s, Argonne National Laboratory, Northern Illinois Gas, Amoco Research Center, AT&T Bell Laboratories, and Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory were established in or near Naperville. Harold Moser led the residential building boom with his first subdivision in 1956. By 1995, Moser had subdivided 8,000 building lots and had built 3,500 homes in Naperville. North Central College, now Methodist-affiliated, continues to serve the Naperville community. The Naper Settlement, established in 1969 under the Naperville Park District, has transported historic structures from across the area and serves as a focal point for the Naperville community. Beginning in the early 1980s, the Riverwalk revitalized the downtown area and today provides acres of park and paths.

Economy:
Naperville is located in the Illinois Technology and Research Corridor. Employers contributing to the population boom of the 1980s and 1990s include Nalco, Bell Labs and Western Electric, BP Amoco Labs, Porsche Finance and Edward Hospital. ConAgra's Grocery division offices are also located in Naperville, and OfficeMax moved corporate headquarters to Naperville in 2006. Naperville was one of the ten fastest growing communities in the U.S. during the 1990s. The city is also home to one of the largest congregations of automobile retailers in the state, as part of the "Ogden Avenue Strip," which extends from Hinsdale to Aurora and includes every major make of automobile on the road today. AutoNation and Bill Jacobs are two of the largest groups within the city itself. In addition, Naperville is home to a plant and the headquarters of Dukane Precast, a precast concrete manufacturer.

Tourism:
Visit Millennium Carillon. This 14-story tall tower boasts a 72-bell Carillon instrument inside. Climb to the top for views of Naperville and beyond. On a clear day, you can even see the Chicago Skyline. Next, Centennial Beach includes sand, grassy area for picnicking, shallow-end slide, water play features, diving boards and more. Fore! Springbrook Golf Course is
an 18-hole, par 72-championship layout with mature trees and foliage that is a challenging experience for players of all levels. Also includes natural turf driving range, short game practice area, two practice putting greens, golf lessons for kids and adults, and a clubhouse with food service and a golf shop. Next, the DuPage Children's Museum is made up of many different exhibit neighborhoods and has three floors. Each neighborhood is packed with exciting ways to explore art, math, science and how they work together in the world. There are also three Young Explorers neighborhoods designed for children up to 24 months.
