Vallejo, California

Vallejo, California, is located in Napa County, only 25 miles north of San Francisco. With a population of over 100,000, Vallejo serves as the gateway to beautiful Napa and Sonoma counties. Vallejo is a lively waterfront community making it a popular travel and relocation destination. Many people come to visit Six Flags or to sample the city’s unique restaurants that reflect its resident’s cultural diversity. With a newly revived local economy and affordable housing, Vallejo has become a popular relocation destination. Vallejo’s proximity to San Francisco and the East Bay make it a place in which to live and work.

Economy:
Vallejo residents are well educated, with an estimated 20 percent of the population possessing college or graduate degrees and another 35 percent have received two-year associate degrees. Kaiser Permanente Medical Center, Vallejo Unified School District, Six Flags Marine World are the city’s largest employers. However, not even these established companies change the May 2008 vote that decided the city would file for Chapter 9 bankruptcy – making it the largest city to do so in California. Many of the cities Councilmen largely blame exorbitant salaries and benefits for Vallejo firefighters and police officers. Reportedly, salaries and benefits for public safety workers accounted for nearly 80 percent of Vallejo's budget. Today the city works to return to the affluent, stable community it once enjoyed.

History:
Vallejo, California is the original home of California's state government, and is the home of the most famous naval shipbuilding facility on the West Coast. A city’s rich history is entwined deeply to the state it was born and to the country it served during two world wars. In 1850, after California was admitted to the Union, General Vallejo donated over 150 acres of his land and promised the sum of $370,000 to create his dream of a prosperous state capital. Vallejo planned the site to be called Eureka, but citizens insisted the city be named in his honor. Thus, in 1852, Vallejo became the first permanent spot of California state government. Unfortunately, the city's glory was short-lived. Soon members of the legislature became unhappy with the living and working conditions in the pioneer city. As a result, the capital moved to Sacramento just weeks later. However, inconvenienced by floods, the agitated legislature moved back to Vallejo, before finally returning to Sacramento where the capital remains today. The geography of the area continues to play a significant role in the city’s development and future. Located at the northern edge of the San Pablo Bay, Vallejo's waterfront location makes the city an important harbor for not only the military but also for commercial shipping, oil companies and ferry transportation.

Tourism:
Located south of Napa Valley in the Bay Area, Vallejo is well known as the home of Six Flags Marine World -- one of few attractions able to boast an oceanarium, animal and amusement park all at one location. Activities at the park rang from dolphin shows, to rides on some of the world’s premier roller coasters. Vallejo is also the site of the once secret Mare Island Naval Shipyard. Closed by the military in 1996, the shipyard is now open for tours, uncovering nearly 150 years of U.S. Navy, California and Vallejo history. The city's tepid, sunny climate allows for optimal recreational opportunities that include fishing, sailing and jet skiing at the Vallejo Municipal Marina. Do not forget to take a tour of Napa Valley's world famous wineries, where visitors have the chance to sample fine wines and enjoy the epic scenery.
