Ontario, California

Situated just 35 miles east of Los Angeles, Ontario, California was founded as a city based on innovation, development, community service and family values. Today, the economic center of the region, the city continues to invest in the growth and evolution of the area’s economy. Priding itself on its ability to provide a balance of jobs, housing and recreational opportunities make Ontario a safe, well-maintained moving destination.

History:
In 1891, Ontario was incorporated as a city under the California constitution. Ontario first developed as an agricultural community, largely but not entirely devoted to the citrus industry. A few of the lovely Victorian "grove houses" from the time still survive, remnants of the days when farmers lived the graceful lives of the old Spanish dons. In 1923, Judge Archie Mitchell, Waldo Waterman and several other airplane enthusiasts established Latimer Field. From that time on, the town became gradually more aviation conscious. Urban growth pushed aviation progressively east, until they took up their present location in the Ontario International Airport. During World War II, the city was a demanding training hub for pilots of the hot Lockheed "Lightning" twin-boom fighter. Since World War II, Ontario has become a considerably more diversified community. With its mean temperature of 61 degrees and its convenient Southern California location the city continues to attract residents and businesses. Today, the city has expanded from the less than half a square mile of area incorporated back in 1891, up to almost 50 square miles of progressive, attractive land.

Economy:
In the years that followed Ontario's incorporation, the economy was driven by its status as a health resort. Shortly thereafter, citrus farmers began taking advantage of Ontario's rocky soil to plant lemon and orange groves. Agricultural opportunities also attracted vintners and olive growers, who saw the opportunity in the fertile lands. Dairy farming was also a popular sector, and it continues to be in neighboring Chino. A major pre-war industry was the city's General Electric plant that produced clothing irons. Today, Ontario remains a manufacturing industry, the most notable of which being the Maglite Corporation, one of the world’s leader producers of flashlights. However, manufacturing has decreased throughout the city, and today Ontario's economy is dominated by service industries and warehousing; however, much of southern Ontario still contains dairy farms and other agricultural farms. The area is currently under planning for further developed into a mixed-use area of residential homes, industrial and business parks, and town centers. The area is collectively known as the New Model Colony. The City of Ontario is also home to the Famous Stars and Straps clothing company.

Tourism:
People enjoy Ontario for its variety of engaging activities. Ontario has dozens of restaurants, is loaded with fun attractions, breweries and bars, two golf courses, an art museum and mush more. Head over to the San Diego Zoo. One of the finest zoos in the world, the San Diego Zoo is only a few miles away and offers once in a lifetime experiences. Next, check out Scandia, and treat the kids to an exciting day at this family fun center. The amusement park features 25 rides, two themed miniature golf courses, batting cages and a huge arcade. The city’s Museum of History and Art offers a detailed look into the art, culture and history of the greater Ontario region. The museum offers exhibitions, lectures and educational programs. Before you call it a day, head over to the Auto Club Speedway. The only race track in Southern California, the speedway allows visitors to watch exciting stock car races, NASCAR Bush series and the Sprint cup.

Colleges/Universities:

Interesting Facts:

  • Ontario is home to Southern California’ only racetrack.
  • The city is one of Southern California’s fastest growing cities for more than 25 years.
