Friendly but Incompetent

I was offered free boxes prior to the move, which never arrived. The movers arrived less than 15 minutes late. I knew I was in for trouble when one of the guys came into the apartment smoking a cigarette. Aside from the television, the guys didn't wrap anything and just put every item into the truck loose, including the pictures that they said that they were going to box. One of these was damaged. I caught one guy opening up a comic bag with a fragile 1960s comic book and flipping through it. I warned him that if any of them turned up missing, that I would know who did it. The guys didn't bother with any of the extension cords—I had to get them myself, and they packed the wardrobe boxes in, making work for me as I had to bag up the clothing. They wrapped no items and I don't think they ever used any of the blankets. Many of the support pegs from my bookcases and such were lost. A few I found on the ground and retrieved, but most I did not. The arrival was the worst. They didn't seem to care that they got a paid break as I rode up on the subway. They were in such a hurry that they would not obey the simplest of instructions, such as to put the clothing bags in the bedroom and the boxes marked "kitchen" in the kitchen. Instead, they put everything in the living room until they ran out of space, after which they started putting bookshelves and boxes of books in the kitchen. I said that I wanted the bookcases against the walls, but the men blocked off the intended walls with boxes, creating more work for me. I'm still trying to find some items, such as my telephone, so that I can hook it up and deal with the phone company. I asked for the tip to be refunded. I was told over the phone that it would be. I got a call from Joseph, who was upset that I had taken off the tip. Tips are for a job well done, which this was not, other than the sense that more things didn't get lost or missing. He said that the lack of wrapping is because it would cost extra. I never said that I wouldn't pay the extra, but the guys told me that the pictures would go in a box, which was a flat-out lie, in addition to the general carelessness that they exhibited that day. I would not use this company again.
