Sterling Heights, Michigan

Sterling Heights is the third largest in area and the fourth largest in population in the state of Michigan. The city is home to more than 3,500 commercial and industrial businesses, and is located just 20-35 minutes northeast of downtown Detroit in the county of Macomb. Those moving to Sterling Heights' will discover a high quality of life with exceptional neighborhoods, a world-class library, lush parks, and low tax and crime rates.

History:
During the mid 1950s, booming manufacturers looked for new opportunities outside of the city of Detroit and ultimately chose the rural lands of Sterling Township to call home. The Ford Motor Company, Chrysler Corporation, LTV Missile Plant and Briggs Manufacturing all followed the "Golden Corridor" up Van Dyke and Mound Roads and settled into Sterling Township. With the tremendous industrial growth, plant workers followed the move to Sterling Township and left Hamtramck, Detroit, Warren and other southern Macomb County cities. With the boom, however, residents and township officials stumbled into massive flooding due to the lack of drainage systems, compounded in some areas by a major drain running into the township from the City of Troy. During this period of tremendous growth, neighboring communities, as well as a number of residents threatening to declare their neighborhoods a separate community, made attempts to seize land from the township. In 1960, a proposal to incorporate a portion of Sterling with Clinton and Harrison Townships went before the voters. Proponents for incorporating the three communities into the City of Moravian Hills faced a tough battle when opposing residents formed S.T.O.M.P., "Sterling Township Opposes Moravian Proposal." The proposal was soundly defeated. In 1967, the first charter commission presented voters with a ballot charter proposal establishing a Strong Mayor form of government. With a record 6,687 ballots being cast on the issue, voters voiced a firm “no” to the proposed city of Sterling Heights strong mayor government. The city was finally formally incorporated in 1968. Today, Sterling Heights is considered an integral part of the greater Detroit Metropolitan area.

Economy:
In recent years dependence on the auto industry has decreased, while the services sector has increased. Still, the automobile rules, and as go auto sales, so goes the Detroit area economy. There is also a budding industry growing up around firms researching hydrogen fuel cells and other non-petroleum power generating technologies that may drive the automobiles of the future. More than 75 percent of the labor force is employed in non-manufacturing jobs in such areas as research and development; accounting, law, and financial services; computer services; and personnel and clerical support. The area is the world headquarters for General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co., DaimlerChrysler Corp., and Volkswagen of America. Other national and international corporations headquartered there include Kmart, Compuware, The Budd Company, American National Resources and Federal Mogul.

Tourism:
Sterling Heights offers hundreds of relaxing fun and rewarding activities ranging from a fast-paced game of rink hockey to a quiet day at the park. Popular special events such as Sterlingfest, Music in the Park, Memorial Day Parade, "A Sterling Christmas," and the SterlingScapes V Exhibition on the City Center grounds are also entertaining events found throughout the city. For the golfer, head to Maple Lane Golf Club. The West Course at Maple Lane Golf Club is an 18-hole regulation length golf course in Sterling Heights, Michigan. This short layout will reward good shots and provide a fun golf outing for everyone. There are two other courses on this same property, the East Course, and the North Course. For family fun, Family Go Karts Inc. is the perfect place to spend the afternoon. Test your skills on the fast-paced racetrack, spend sometime in the state-of-the-art arcade and indulge at the facility’s snack bar, where you can enjoy all of your favorite sweets and more. At night, stick around town for a taste of local flavor. Check out one of the city’s dive-bars, or head over to a local diner for a late-night snack.
