Hot Springs National Park, Arkansas

Hot Springs National Park, Arkansas lies close to Hot Springs Mountain from where natural thermal water flows, thus giving the city its name.

Those moving to Hot Springs National Park will also discover numerous employment opportunities. Advance Care Hospital, Hot Springs Rehabilitation Center, Hot Springs Surgical Hospital, Leo N Levi National Arthritis, National Park Medical Center and St Josephs Mercy Health Center attend to the health needs of the city’ inhabitants, while Little Rock National Airport and Hot Springs Memorial Field Airport provide air transportation links. There is an Amtrak station in the city.

Tourism and health tourism are clearly the mainstays of the economy of Hot Springs, bringing in many millions of dollars each year. It is to be noted that water from the thermal springs is supplied to residents of the city free of charge.

The thermal springs have drawn people from the time the Native American tribes inhabited the area to the present day.

The first Europeans to come to Hot Springs was in 1541 when the Spaniard Hernando de Soto arrived, followed by more Spanish and French settlers. The French claimed the area in 1673, the 1763 Treaty of Paris ceded the settlement to Spain, the French regained the territory in 1800 and, finally, by way of the Louisiana Purchase, took control in 1803. The City of Hot Springs was incorporated in 1876.

The 47 springs which produce the thermal water for which Hot Springs is famous is obviously the city’s draw card. There are numerous drinking fountains dotted around the downtown area where one may drink the water free of charge.

Hot Springs National Park, which is home to Bathhouse Row and its beautiful historic buildings, is a must see for all tourists to the city. Two of these bath houses – the Quapaw and the Buckstaff – are still in use today, while a third, the Fordyce Bathhouse, is now a museum.

Interesting Facts:

  • The 42nd President of the United States, Bill Clinton, lived in Hot Springs during his youth.
  • Hot Springs has the nickname Spa City.
