Tuscaloosa, Alabama

The name Tuscaloosa is derived from the Choctaw Indian Chief named “Tushka Lusa,” the first part means “warrior” and the second “black.” Unfortunately for the Chief though, he was defeated in battle by the Spanish explorer Hernando De Soto in 1540. That is not the only fascinating fact about this vibrant City – Tuscaloosa, Alabama ranks among the “50 Best Places to Launch a Small Business” and it features among the Nation’s “100 Best Communities for Young People” too. Those moving to Tuscaloosa will discover a charming city with numerous housing options.

History:
The Black Warrior River, so revered by many Indian tribes for so long was the all-important reason for the town’s early development after a few intrepid frontiersmen arrived to set up base. By 1812, the settlement had expanded to a small town as more settlers arrived. In 1817, Alabama became a territory and two years later the legislature incorporated the town of Tuscaloosa. On December 14th, 1819 Congress admitted Alabama into the Union as a State and for a twenty year period Tuscaloosa was the State Capital of Alabama.  Eventually, this title went to Montgomery though in 1846. In 1890, the area was further opened up, thanks to the construction of a series of locks and dams on the Black Warrior River. These links connected Tuscaloosa to the Gulf seaport of Mobile, and with this the mining and metallurgical industries of the region received a major boost. By the time the 20th century dawned, the University of Alabama had grown impressively as confidence encouraged steady growth in Tuscaloosa which was to last another 100 years. Today, the city of Tuscaloosa has an enviable list of global companies investing in its future.

Economy:
Tuscaloosa has a good spread of business and commerce with strong representation from the manufacturing industry, federal, state and local government, the service sector, education, retail, healthcare, finance and insurance, and tourism. With several global names such as Mercedes-Benz U. S. International, GAF Materials Corporation, JVC America heading a long list of well known players, Tuscaloosa’s future does indeed look very healthy. For many years now, Tuscaloosa has been highly regarded as a College City too with a number of world-class facilities ensuring a well educated local population.

The Tuscaloosa Convention & Visitor Center has a comprehensive list of attractions on its website but here are some of our suggestions:
