Green rental cars may be expensive, difficult to find

February 3, 2010 - Individuals who were planning on getting a hybrid rental car to help them during their relocation process may want to reconsider their transportation options.

Although environmentally friendly vehicles typically offer cost savings for trips of 50 miles or longer, they are difficult to find at many rental agencies, USA Today reports.

In fact, less than 5 percent of the 1.3 million cars that are available for rent in the U.S. qualify as hybrids vehicles, according to the media outlet.

Additionally, many rental car companies have a hard time acquiring the cars themselves.

As a result, several agencies classify these vehicles as specialty cars and add a premium charge to the cost of the rental.

Renters of these vehicles may also pay more or travel further for gas, as online 1 percent of the nation's gas stations carry the emission-reducing fuel that makes hybrid cars eco-friendly.

Individuals who are planning a move may be able to save money on transportation by renting their vehicles from independent agencies, which typically offer daily rates that are 25 to 30 percent less than national companies, according to Car Rental Express.
