San Antonio, Texas

Lacking many of the characteristics of the Wild West, attractive and cheerful San Antonio looks nothing like stereotypical image of Texas, despite being crucial in the state's history. Situated at a geographical intersection, the city encapsulates the intricate social and ethnic mixes of Texas. Although the Germans, have made a cultural strong contribution, today's San Antonio is predominantly Hispanic. Although today San Antonio is ranked the seventh largest city in the U.S., it retains an easygoing, unrefined feel and is one of the nicest moving destinations.

History:
The actual founding of the city came in 1718. In 1836, 189 defenders held the old mission against more than 4,000 Mexican troops for 13 days at the Alamo. The cry "Remember the Alamo" became the rallying point of the Texan revolution against Mexico. Over a month after the Alamo fell, Sam Houston's Texans crushed Santa Anna at San Jacinto, and the Republic of Texas was established. The battles and uncertainties, however, did not end until 1845 when Texas became the 28th U.S. state. A regional cattle industry evolved, and San Antonio's development was further improved with the arrival of gaslights, telephones and electricity. When the city entered the twentieth century, it was a melting pot of German and Hispanic influence, and its population boomed with newcomers from urban America. The beginning of World War II meant rigorous military activity for San Antonio. By the 1970s, the city's population numbered more than 700,000 people, of which more than half were Hispanic. In recent years, the city has seen continued growth, with the completion of such projects as the expansion of the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center and the SBC Center, the new home for the Spurs.

Economy:
The largest employment sectors in San Antonio are services, government and manufacturing. The large concentration of government workers is due largely to the location of four military bases in the area. The service sector is the leading and fastest growing sector of the city’s economy, mainly due to increased demand for health care and business services, and San Antonio's stable tourism industry. Medical and biomedical industries now account for the largest part of the city's economy, contributing approximately $12 billion to the area in 2003. San Antonio's highly regarded medical industry includes the 900-acre South Texas Medical Center, which employs some 25,000 locals. Medical industry employees account for 14 percent of all employees in the San Antonio. The attractions of the Alamo City, as San Antonio is known, appeal to tourists from across the country. Approximately 8 million people visit San Antonio annually, making a big impact on the city's economy.

Tourism:
San Antonio has much to offer ranging from major theme parks to the River Walk lined with restaurants, galleries and shops. The city is filled with culturally significant arts, culture, museums and architecture. Take a stroll through the restored Japanese Tea Garden and swim with the dolphins at SeaWorld San Antonio. Next, play a round of golf at one of the city's forty courses or plan a trip around the next Spurs game, Rampage hockey game or WNBA Silver Stars game. San Antonio’s major theme parks top the list of must-sees, but dozens of other attractions include the San Antonio Zoo, the Children's Museum and Ripley's Haunted Adventure. Be sure not to miss the Alamo, Texas’ most famous attraction. Stroll the isolated sections of the River Walk or wander through the Spanish missions. Finally, soak up some live music—everything from polka to R&B, everyday at Main Plaza.
