Don't Count on the Quotes
I am very upset with the final cost of my move. First of all, the estimate that I was provided for my one-bedroom apartment with 20 boxes was different than what I was actually charged. I also let them know that I may go over the 20 boxes and was told that it would only add an extra half-hour to the move for a total of three and a half hours. This was for a two man move. Second, when they showed up there were three men. The employee in charge clearly said that he did not realize that he was to bring one helper. It took them three hours just to pack up. I did not have a lot of stuff. When the move was completed (five hours from the starting time) they charged me for the extra man. I called the office and they would not take off the charge saying that they gave me a reduced rate of only $20 more per hour for the extra man. I feel they shouldn't have charged me at all since it was not in the original contract: I was livid. Not only did they under-estimate my move, they would not compensate me for the misallocated time and extra person! If they are not going to stick to the estimate they give you over the phone then they should be physically visiting the homes to give a more accurate estimate. I felt bad for the driver and his helpers because they were all very nice. Their tip was drastically reduced due to how management handled the situation.

Response from Oscar's Moving Company
We did go with a three-man crew for this move when we originally thought two men would be good. As it turned out, the move did require a great deal more work than we were originally aware of according to the consumer’s description of the move. The consumer stated that she was very happy with the way the men worked and that they all worked very hard the whole time. She definitely saved a lot of money in the long run by having the extra man on the crew. It is always helpful to be as accurate as possible about listing the items to be moved and describing the layout of each location in order to get the most accurate estimate for the move. This consumer had great amount more items to be moved than she originally told us about when getting the estimate, and there was something blocking the closer entrance to one location on the move day which meant a longer carry distance around the building, which adds time. We don’t add any fees for having to do more work than we were originally told about, you just need to pay for the amount of time needed, that’s all. Our crewmen work very hard to get the moves done as quick and efficient as possible while taking very good care of all the items. We just can’t be expected to work for free when there’s twice as much work to be done as what the estimate was originally based upon. Please try to be thorough when describing the details of the move to get the most accurate estimate so we can all plan accordingly, and keep in mind that if the move goes quicker, it will cost less; and if there’s more work to be done and the move takes longer, it will cost more. Thank you very much, we appreciate your business.
