Origin of State's Name: The name Wyoming is based on an Algonquin Indian word meaning “large prairie place.” Wyoming became the 44th state on July 10, 1890.

Agriculture and Industry: Wyoming is largely sustained by agriculture, primarily feed grains and livestock and mining, including petroleum and gas production. Most of the inhabitants of the state derive their livelihood directly or indirectly from farming or ranching. The most valuable farm commodities are cattle, hay, sugar beets and wheat. Mining is the largest sector of the state's economy, accounting for about one quarter of the gross state product. Oil wells were first drilled in the 1860s, and today petroleum remains one of the state's most important minerals. Wyoming is a significant U.S. producer sodium carbonate and uranium as well, and considerable amounts of gold, iron and various clays are mined.

State Bird: Wyoming designated the western meadowlark as official state bird in 1927. The western meadowlark is a familiar songbird of open country across the western two-thirds of the continent.

State Tree: Wyoming designated the plains cottonwood as official state tree in 1947.

State Flower: Indian paintbrush was designated the state flower of Wyoming in 1917. Also called prairie fire, Indian paintbrush is a genus of about 200 species of annual and perennial herbaceous plants native to the west of the Americas from Alaska south to the Andes (as well as northeast Asia).

State Song: Written by C.E. Winter with music by G.E. Knapp, “Wyoming,” is the official state song.
