Check with local realtors for listings on apartments and studios. Here is some information on the city of Austin, Texas to get you on your way.

Economy:
Austin's role as a hub for high technology has made it particularly vulnerable to the recession. For three consecutive years, Austin suffered layoffs and job reductions; even the city government slashed 1,000 jobs. An offshoot of Austin's leadership in the semiconductor and software industries is the wireless segment. With a developed infrastructure of telecommunication, transportation, electric and water capacities, Austin is a leading site for wireless technologies. Qualcomm Corporation constructed a computer chip design center in Austin in 2004, the same year that Verizon Wireless selected Austin as the first city for the launch of its Broadband Access 3G Network, a high-speed wireless Internet access service. Other wireless companies with a presence in Austin include AT&T Wireless, Dell, Intel and T-Mobile. Drawing on the same expertise in high technology and innovation, the city is venturing into the biomedical and pharmaceuticals industry. The University of Texas at Austin is a primary asset in this arena. It has excellent programs in bioengineering, nanotechnology, bioinformatics, and pharmaceutical research and is a leader in the number of science and engineering doctoral degrees it awards. Austin boasts a high quality labor force, based in large part on its highly trained, youthful population. The region's seven colleges and universities, particularly the University of Texas at Austin, produce highly skilled, innovate graduates seeking entry into the workforce.

History:
Originally called Waterloo, Austin was becoming a booming city by the 1880s. In 1893, the construction of the Great Granite Dam on the Colorado River was another milestone in the city’s growth. The dam stabilized the river and provided hydraulic power to generate electricity, which in turn attracted manufacturers. By 1938, the dam had been replaced by a series of seven U.S. government-funded dams. As Austin emerged from the Depression, the seeds of the city’s future as a center of high technology were being carefully planted. By the 1950s, several research laboratories and think tanks had been founded, and began to draw innovative thinkers and high-tech companies to the area. As Austin’s economy prospered, the area attracted more amenities. Rapid growth in the 1970s contributed to added political activity, this time at the local level. Strong neighborhood, environmental, and historic preservation communities sprang up, and remain an integral part of Austin’s civic life today. Today, Austin is known as much for its cultural life and high-tech innovations as it is for the senators and schoolteachers who shaped its beginnings.

Tourism:
Start by visiting the Austin Museum of Art. This museum is definitely reflecting the unconventional spirit of the city. The galleries present continually changing exhibitions and education programs that display an array of 20th century and contemporary art. Next, the Ziker the Botanical garden is ideally located close to downtown Austin. The 33-acre space is filled by nature with aquatic features and beautiful trees. Some of the gardens you can visit include the Taniguchi Japanese garden, floral display garden and the Hartman Prehistoric Garden. Then, relax at the Barton Spring Pool -- one of Austin’s most unique attractions. Barton Springs Pool is located in the heart of the city, within Zilker Park and is a beautiful spring-fed pool. The water temperature is on average 68 degrees year round. For some family fun, Volente Beach is the only water park in Austin. Situated next to Lake Travis, it has several fun water slides, an area for small children and a sandy beach. Or, head over to the Austin Zoo. This zoo is unique due to it being classified a “rescue zoo,” and is home to nearly 100 species of animals. Spend the day exploring and feeding some of the earths most valuable assets. At night, there is plenty in the way of bars, nightclubs and diners. Dance the night away with friends or spend a mellow evening at one of the cities laidback lounges.
