Ohio Real Estate and Homes for Sale
The state of Ohio offers a wide range of urban, suburban and rural real estate. As you shop for homes for sale in Ohio, be sure to work with a real estate agent so that you can gain a thorough understanding of the properties you’re reviewing.

An experienced Ohio realtor can help you decide whether to settle in the Appalachian Mountain area to the east, the rugged hills of the Allegheny Plateau or the Glacial Plains of the western region. If you prefer to search for urban real estate in Ohio, there’s plenty to choose from. Because Ohio is a meeting-place between the Northeast and the Midwest, it has several thriving centers of trade, particularly the seaports on the Lake Erie coastline to the north.

But before you begin calling Ohio real estate agents, take a moment to learn more about “The Buckeye State” and the “Buckeyes” who live there.

Origin of State's Name: “Ohio” means “Great River” in the Iroquois language.

Capital City: The capital city of Ohio is Columbus, which is also the county seat of Delaware County. The city was decreed into existence by the Ohio legislature after a contentious debate over the location of the capital of the new state. Columbus was laid out in 1812 and officially designated as the capital in 1816. Its rapid growth was due in part to its proximity to major transportation systems, including the National Road and the Ohio & Erie Canal, as well as railroad and telegraph lines.

Population: According to estimates by the U.S. Census Bureau, the population of Ohio was slightly more than 4.5 million residents as of 2009.

Driving: Driver’s license information, applications, testing requirements, driver’s manuals and testing locations can all be found on the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles’ website.

Agriculture and Industry: Ohio is known for its manufacturing plants, particularly the factories that make airplanes, automobiles and fabricated metals. One of the most important products of Ohio farms is milk. The state is also famous for its pig farms, and it is also a leading producer of eggs, cattle, chickens, turkey, sheep and wool. The leading crops grown in Ohio are soybeans and corn. Greenhouse products, apples, grapes, wheat, oats, hay, peaches and popcorn also number among the major agricultural exports from Ohio.

State Bird: The Ohio state bird is the cardinal, which is known for the brilliant red plumage of the males of the species.

State Tree: The Ohio state tree is the buckeye. The inedible nuts produced by the tree are said to be similar to the eye of a deer buck.

State Flower: The Ohio state flower is the red carnation. It was adopted in honor of President William McKinley, who often wore the flower in his lapel.

State Song: The state song is “Beautiful Ohio.” Its tune was written by Mary Earl, and the lyrics in their present form were written by William McBride.

Most Popular Cities:

Ohio – Interesting Facts:
  • Ohio is known as “The Buckeye State” because when William Henry Harrison ran for the Presidency in 1840, his campaign song referred to a cabin in the shade of the buckeye tree and called Ohio “the bonnie Buckeye state.” The song became so popular that the buckeye tree was forever associated with Ohio.
  • Buckeye nuts were considered a cure-all remedy by the local Native Americans and early Ohioan white settlers.
  • Ohio has more than 40,000 miles of rivers and streams.
  • Ohio has an official state rock song: “Hang on Sloopy.”
  • Ohio’s flag is the only state flag in the United States to have a pennant design.

Ohio – Famous People:
Seven United States Presidents were born in Ohio: Warren G. Harding, William Howard Taft, William McKinley, Benjamin Harrison, James A. Garfield, Rutherford B. Hayes and Ulysses S. Grant. There have also been many other famous Ohioans, including Thomas Alva Edison, Paul Newman, Steven Spielberg, Annie Oakley, Clark Gable and Charles Goodyear.
