Origin of State's Name: The name Minnesota comes from the Dakota Sioux Indian word for sky-tinted water, which refers to the Minnesota River and the state's many lakes.

Capital City: The capital of the state, Saint Paul, is the second most populous city in Michigan. The city lies mostly on the north bank of the Mississippi River and joins with Minneapolis, the state's largest city. For people seeking truly unique urban experiences, Saint Paul is the place to be. In addition to being a primary transportation and distribution hub, Saint Paul has gained a reputation for its effective local government, attractive architecture and quality of life. The combined cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul are highly rated for their livability and rank among the nation's best places to live and do business.

Population: In 2009, the U.S. Census Bureau estimated the state’s population at 5.3 million.

Driving: Driver’s license information, applications, testing requirements, driver’s manuals, testing locations and more can be found on the Minnesota Driver and Vehicle Services website.

Agriculture and Industry: Furs, wheat, pine lumber, and high-grade iron ore were once the basis of Minnesota's economy. As these resources diminished, however, the state turned to wood pulp, dairy products, corn and soybeans, taconite, and manufacturing, often in such food-related industries as meatpacking, canning and the processing of dairy products. Recently, the dairy sector, however, faced historically low prices, increasing the number of dairy producers leaving the industry. Minnesota’s primary agricultural areas include dairy products, corn, cattle, soybeans, hogs, wheat and turkeys. Major state industries include machinery, food processing, printing and publishing, electric equipment, mining, tourism leading industries and fabricated metal products.

State Bird: Adopted in 1961, the common loon is the state bird of Minnesota. These birds have wingspans up to five feet and body lengths up to three feet.

State Tree: The red or Norway pine became the official state tree in 1953. Red pines are tall, majestic trees that reach heights of 60 to nearly 150 feet. Their trunks are straight and uniform and may grow to five feet in diameter.

State Flower: In 1902, the pink and white lady’s slipper was designated the official state flower of Minnesota. These flowers live up to 50 years and can take up to 16 years to produce their first flower.

State Song: The official state song of Minnesota is “Hail Minnesota.”
