Capital City: The capital of Louisiana is Baton Rouge. It was established in 1719 as a French military outpost. The French soldiers noticed a dead red cypress tree which had been stripped of its bark and leaves, and named the town “Red Stick” in their own language. Population: As of 2009, the U.S. Census Bureau estimated the population of Louisiana at 4,492,000 people.

Driving: Driver’s license information, applications, testing requirements, driver’s manuals and testing locations can all be found on the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles’ website.

Agriculture and Industry: The largest sector in Louisiana agriculture is forestry, because the state has more than 13 million acres of forest. Other important agricultural commodities include sugar cane, rice, soybeans, corn and cattle. Louisiana’s largest manufacturing sector is chemical production, including fertilizers, pesticides, petrochemicals, plastics and paints.

State Bird: The Louisiana state bird is the brown pelican, which is known for its large bill.

State Tree: The bald cypress is the Louisiana state tree; it was not designated as the official tree until 1963.
