Regardless of where you chose to live, you will soon find Chicago to be a wonderful city full of life and buzzing with opportunity.

History:
Jean Baptiste Point du Sable, an African American from Santo Domingo, founded the first permanent settlement in 1781. The location at the mouth of the Chicago River was chosen for its strategic value for a trading post as the river connected the Lake with the Mississippi river. In 1833, Chicago was officially incorporated as a town and four years later, when the population reached 4170, as a city. With the arrival of the railroads, the city of Chicago really started to boom reaching a population of 300,000 in 1870. One year later, disaster struck with the Great Chicago Fire laying the city in ashes. The fire destroyed about 17,450 buildings, but the Chicagoans quickly started to rebuild the city. And in 1893 Chicago had recovered well enough to host the 1893 World Columbian Exposition, commemorating the discovery by Columbus of America 400 years ago. Some of the leading architects reconstructing the city after the Great Fire laid out the foundations of Chicago. Daniel Burnham designed the first visionary urban plan for a city, the 1909 Chicago plan. At the end of the 19th century the land prices had risen dramatically, which lead to the construction of higher buildings. In 1885, William Le Baron Jenney built what is known as the first skyscraper in the world: the Home Insurance Building. This building marks the start of Chicago as a pioneering architectural city. Many famous architects like Louis Sullivan and later Mies van der Rohe would set new standards for urban architecture in Chicago.

Economy:
The city's diversified economy is based on manufacturing, printing and publishing, finance, insurance and food processing. A substantial industrial base and a major inland port contribute to the city's position as a national transportation and distribution center. The source of nationally distributed magazines, catalogs, educational materials, encyclopedias, and specialized publications, Chicago ranks second only to New York in the publishing industry. The city is home to the Federal Reserve Bank, the Chicago Board of Trade, and the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. Like many large cities, Chicago has a large immigrant population. The immigrants come from all over the world, including Poland, Mexico, India, the former Soviet Union, the Philippines, and China. Despite fears that low-skilled immigrants would not be assimilated into an increasingly high-tech economy, local analysts say the newcomers are following the success track of earlier groups, working their way into the middle class after performing service and laboring jobs.

Tourism:
Start your exploration at Museum Campus. Located near Soldier Field, Museum Campus is home to the Field Museum, Adler Planetarium and the Shedd Aquarium, which is the world's largest indoor aquarium with more than 8,000 aquatic animals representing more than 700 species from all parts of the world. Next, two of the finest zoos in the country are located in the Chicago area. First, located on the city’s north side is Lincoln Park Zoo. One of the country’s last free zoos, Lincoln Park is one of the oldest zoos in the country and one of the most modern. Next, there is Brookfield Zoo. Located in Brookfield, just west of Chicago, this zoo is situated on 216 acres of marvelously landscaped grounds, featuring over 2,000 animals for you and your family to enjoy. No matter what time of year you visit Chicago, there is bound to be special events that you will not want to miss. Many of the special events are held in the summer, including the Taste of Chicago, the Chicago Blues Festival, and the Chicago Air and Water Show. Sports are big in Chicago. The city is home to two major league baseball teams, a professional football team and hockey team. Catch a game year-round at one of the city’s historic facilities. At night, there is plenty of opportunity to let loose. Visit one of the cities many nightclubs and bars for dancing and mingling. For a mellower evening, grab a slice of famous Chicago-style pizza and a Coke with the ones you love.
