Illinois Real Estate and Homes for Sale
The state of Illinois has one of the largest populations in the Midwest, with most of its residents located in the city of Chicago. This means that a wide-range of Illinois real estate is available, ranging from urban homes in Chicago (and a few other small industrial cities) to small-town dwellings and farms in the rural parts of the state. If you need help deciding which community is right for you, be sure to seek out a few Illinois realtors to help you understand this varied state. Whether you prefer to seek out the warmer climate of the south, the broad prairies in the middle or the exciting urban real estate in the north, there is sure to be a place for you in Illinois.

Origin of State's Name: The origins of the word “Illinois” are uncertain. Many linguists suggest that it comes from an Algonquin word for “warrior.”

Capital City: The capital of Illinois is Springfield, which was settled around 1820 when a man named John Kelly built his home at what is now the corner of Second and Jefferson Streets. The town was originally named Calhoun in honor of Senator John C. Calhoun from South Carolina, and it was renamed when Calhoun lost popularity. Springfield’s most famous resident was Abraham Lincoln, who would later become President of the United States.

Population: As of 2009, the U.S. Census Bureau estimated that the population of Illinois was 12,910,000 residents.

Driving: Driver’s license information, applications, testing requirements, driver’s manuals and testing locations can all be found on the Cyber Drive Illinois website.

Agriculture and Industry: Industry in Illinois has generally been centered in Chicago, and it has always been diverse. Farm equipment, cellular telephones, electrical appliances and cooking products are all important exports from this state. More than 40% of Illinois’s agricultural income is from the sale of corn; other important farm products include cattle, oats, sorghum, wheat, hay, sheep, chickens, fruits and vegetables.

State Bird: The Illinois state bird is the cardinal, whose bright red plumage reminded American settlers of the red habits of cardinals of the Catholic Church.

State Tree: The Illinois state tree is the white oak, which was designated in response to a vote by schoolchildren in 1973.

State Flower: The Illinois state flower is the violet, a delicate purple flower that blooms in the spring. The flowers and young leaves of the plant are edible.

State Song: The state’s official song is named “Illinois.” It was composed by Archibald Johnson, and the lyrics were written by C. H. Chamberlain.
