Space heater tips

November 5, 2010 - Since winter is quickly approaching, many renters and homeowners might be dusting off their space heaters for those chilly days.

Space heaters may provide instant warmth, but it is important to consider home security and take precaution when using them.

The Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers suggests that space heater users never leave them unattended and be sure to unplug them when not in use. Don't plug the space heater into an extension cord or power strip; the cord can overheat and cause a fire.

Additionally, all potentially flammable objects such as bedding, papers and clothes should be kept at least three feet from the heater. It is not a good idea to use the heater in wet or damp areas like the bathroom, unless the heater is specifically designed for such use.

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), space heaters accounted for 30 percent of the home heating fires and 73 percent of home heating fire deaths in 2006.

Moreover, in 2003-2006 having combustible objects too close to the heater was the leading factor contributing to 28 percent of heating fires and 46 percent of deaths, states the NFPA.
