Real estate agents can normally seek utility bills from the past 12 months from the previous owner, giving homebuyers an idea of how much powering the home costs at different points in the year. Additionally, buyers can seek out the services of a certified energy auditor, who can determine how much they'll pay in energy costs at their new home and what steps they can take to improve its sustainability.
There are also certain telltale signs of a home that uses up a lot of energy, including older plumbing fixtures, ornate landscaping that requires plenty of water and care, and aged or drafty windows and doors. Taking these matters into consideration can also help homebuyers determine how much money they'll need to spend on energy-efficient upgrades after moving into their new home, said the source.
The price of oil and propane climbed 26 and 9.5 percent, respectively, last year, according to the U.S. Energy Information Association.
