Survey: African Americans willing to pay more for utilities that will protect the environment
March 10, 2010 - As lawmakers work to develop legislation that will combat global warming, recent research suggests that African American homeowners and renters may be willing to pay extra for eco-friendly housing options.
A recent study from the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies found that many African American voters would support laws that would raise their utility bills in order to protect the environment, USA Today reports.
A total of 500 black residents of Arkansas, Indiana, Missouri and South Carolina were asked how much money they would be willing to tack onto their monthly energy bills in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. While large majorities of respondents in all states reported that they would be willing to pay $10 more per month, roughly one-sixth of voters said they would accept bills that were $50 higher.
Although some clean energy additions can result in higher utility costs, individuals who launch home repair and maintenance projects to make their homes more efficient may be able to save money over time. In addition, these homeowners and renters may be able to receive tax rebates through the proposed Homestar program for installing more eco-friendly water heaters, insulation, duct sealing, roofing or doors, news channel WAFF reports.
