President Obama releases more details on the Homestar program for homeowners

March 2, 2010 - Homeowners and who wish to make their houses more efficient may be able to receive rebates for their home maintenance and repair efforts, as President Obama is currently lobbying Congress to pass a program that will encourage these projects.

Today, the President revealed more details about a new initiative called the Homestar Program to an audience in Savannah, Georgia, WTOC 11 News channel reports.

If it is passed, the program will award instant tax rebates of $1,000 or more to homeowners who make eco-friendly home improvements, such as installing new insulation, buying new water heaters or replacing other appliances with more efficient models.

The program is intended to create jobs in the construction industry, which is currently experiencing unemployment rates of approximately 25 percent. To encourage the creation of new jobs, many of the home improvements that may qualify homeowners for rebates require the approval of several workers, including certified contractors and independent quality assurance professionals.

Although the initiative is still pending lawmakers' approval, members of the construction industry have already leant their support to the program.

Larry Laester, president of Masco Home Services, said he expects the initiative could make participants' homes between 20 and 50 percents more efficient.
