Generators essential for homeowners surviving storms

June 14, 2010 - When consumers are moving to a new location, they should consider whether a generator would be a worthwhile investment.

Winter and summer storms cannot only cause massive amounts of damage to a person's home, they can also leave them without power for an extended period of time, the Washington Post said. Living without heat or air conditioning won't just make life uncomfortable, it could also be dangerous.

This is expected to be a record year for hurricanes, the newspaper reported. Spoiled food and knocked-out sump pumps can cost a person hundreds of dollars. Investing in a generator - portable or permanent - could end up saving money in the long run.

Having a generator to power a sump pump can also lower the risk of an insurance company dropping a homeowner. Virgina resident Bill Howard told the Post "insurance companies hate water-damage claims, and they're very paranoid about mold, so if you have a couple of water damage claims, they will let you go. I know how many at-bats I have with my insurance company, and I don't want to waste them with this."

Consumers should always prepare a disaster emergency kit in the event a storm knocks out power to their home.
