Tips to keep valuables safe in self-storage units
February 11, 2010 - Self-storage units can help homeowners keep clutter out of their homes. However, many public storage units may be susceptible to break-ins.
Fortunately, there are several security measures homeowners can take to ensure their valuables will remain in their units.
In response to recent burglaries at storage units in Boise, Idaho, local police issued a series of tips to help these unit renters avoid falling victim to similar robberies.
The officers suggested that storage customers secure their units with locks that cannot be easily cut. Although hardware and home improvement stores generally charge more for these devices, thieves who use bolt cutters are likely to target units with weaker, more inexpensive locks.
As the burglaries in Boise typically involved expensive items such as electronics, police suggested that storage customers take photographs of their units. These pictures could help detectives determine a thief's modes of entry and exit, and help officials recover the stolen items if the perpetrator is found.
In addition, renters should record the serial numbers of any electronics or other products that are left in storage units. Some retailers can use this information to track certain devices.
