Young renters may benefit from educational programs

January 21, 2010 - College students and young adults who are searching for their first apartment may benefit from training programs that can teach them what to expect during the rental process.

Although college students and recent graduates typically require the flexibility to move frequently, many of them are searching for temporary and affordable living options.

However, individuals in this demographic who are not familiar with the leasing process could sign binding agreements that are unable to fulfill. While many younger persons who are seeking independence may attempt to find an apartment on their own, those who do not know what questions to ask real estate agents could lose time and money.

Consequently, programs and simple training sessions could help members of this age group ensure that they fulfill their needs during the rental process.

Potomac High School in Washington, D.C. recently partnered with real estate company Home Properties to show students an effective procedure for renting an apartment.

A leasing manager showed these potential renters what to expect on an application and taught them about credit checks, tenant agreements, application fees and amenities.
