Apartment tips to keep burglars at bay while you're away
December 16, 2010 - While it may be fun to have your first apartment, there are necessary precautions that need to be taken to ensure the safety of you and your roommates.
Throughout the day, there are usually many people entering and leaving apartment complexes, so it can be difficult to spot any suspicious activity. Burglars can easily blend in and enter unnoticed, Sergeant Dan Ward, spokesman of the Lawrence, Kansas, Police Department told the Kansas City Star.
Ward suggests some basic safety tips to prevent renters from falling victim to a burglary. He suggests locking doors even while you are at home, especially at night. Leaving a spare apartment key under the doormat is one of the most obvious places for thieves to look. Ask a trustworthy neighbor in the building to hold on to it for you.
Many burglaries occur when occupants are not at home. Some home safety experts suggest to try not to make it conspicuous that you are away. Put lights on a timer so that your apartment is lit at night, make sure windows are locked and keep shades or blinds drawn if you are away so potential thieves cannot go window shopping in your apartment. Ask a neighbor to get mail and newspapers while you are gone or have the mail held at the post office.
