As some areas do not evaluate property values on an annual basis, some homes may be taxed according to their worth four to five years ago, Huliq News reports.

Consequently, some homeowners may decide to enter the appeal process if they feel their home's value has decreased significantly in recent years.

Although hiring a lawyer may be the most efficient method to complete this appraisal process, the American Homeowners Association and the National Taxpayers Union both sell kits to help homeowners who wish to save on their taxes without incurring additional costs.

These individuals may wish to enlist the help of a real estate agent to gain an estimate on their home's value by comparing it to recently sold houses in their area. A realtor may also help them ensure that their property assessments are correct, as errors on these reports could affect their property taxes.

A recent report from Kiplinger's advises real estate owners who have recently relocated to find out whether or not they can deduct moving costs from their property taxes as opposed to filing the standard deduction, according to Credit.com.
