Green real estate becoming more accessible to homebuyers through Excel Homes program

January 12, 2010 - Individuals who are planning to relocate to a newly constructed house or upgrade their existing home have several options to make their residences environmentally friendly.

Last month, the government launched a $300 million federal rebate program that allows homeowners to receive a tax credit when they trade in their old appliances for more energy-efficient models, the New York Times reports.

Similar programs exist for individuals who choose to update their appliances, install new insulation or choose alternative sources of energy for their utilities, such as solar or wind, according to the media outlet.

A complete listing of these rewards can be found on the Database of State Incentives for Renewables and Efficiency, which lists the programs according to state.

Real estate owners who are building new homes can use tools such as Excel Homes' Green Building Program to ensure their houses are meeting government-implemented environmental standard.

The online program, which is based on the National Association of Homebuilders' Green Building Standard, allows prospective buyers to crosscheck the features of a home against the organizations requirements for bronze, silver, gold and emerald certification.
