Woodbury University to host sustainability workshops for homeowners, real estate professionals

March 17, 2010 - Woodbury University's Arid Lands Institute has announced it will hold a series of workshops to help homeowners, real estate developers and designers create more eco-friendly homes.

The Burbank, California-based college program, entitled Smart Design Strategies for Managing Water and Energy in a Changing Climate, will include three workshops that will focus on green roofing and construction, environmentally friendly landscaping and rainwater harvesting.

Attendees will learn about current projects, products and policies that are occurring in the green building industry as well as the ways they can implement these trends into their own homes or developments.

Do-it-yourself landscapers may also benefit from the workshops, as they can learn how to utilize their space to grow their own food. In addition, presenters will teach these individuals how to capture rainwater and minimize runoff between their property and public spaces such as driveways, sidewalks and streets.

The presentations could also save homeowners money in the long run, as they will examine the ways these individuals can legally reuse potential waste water, such as laundry machine drainage. Attendees will also have the opportunity to consult a representative from the City of Burbank on issues of codes and permits.
