Interior projects could help homeowners save money, retire early

February 23, 2010 - Homeowners whose houses are in need of home repair and maintenance may want to consider do-it-yourself improvements to their residences instead of investing in a new place, as these projects could help them feel more comfortable in and happy with their homes.

HamptonRoads.com reports that many families in Virginia Beach have been choosing to improve their existing homes rather than purchasing new houses in order to save money and keep their retirement plans on track.

Some of these homeowners are unwilling to leave their neighborhoods, as they may have children who attend local schools or close relationships with their neighbors. Consequently, several of these individuals have chosen to renovate their homes or build new houses on their property.

Other residents decided to make more subtle improvements to their homes, including kitchen and bathroom remodels, sunroof additions or design and decorating projects.

Better Homes and Gardens reports that the cost of a typical kitchen remodel ranges between $15,000 and $45,000 per home. Although similar projects could save homeowners on moving costs, individuals who are remodeling should plan to exceed their original estimate by approximately 12 percent, according to the media outlet.
