Google Maps pulling back real estate search feature

February 4, 2011 - Many Americans may have consulted Google Maps when arranging moving plans since its real estate feature was launched in 2009, but the company said it's discontinuing the option February 10.

In a blog post, the company's vice president for Google Earth and Maps, Brian McClendon, said low usage and the development of property search features on real estate websites prompted Google to put an end to the feature this month. The option, accessible through a drop-down menu next to the search bar on Google Maps, allowed house-hunters to review properties for sale in whichever area they desired. Additionally, many real estate agents and companies used the option as a launching point for their own property search features.

"Yet we recognize that there might be better, more effective ways to help people find local real estate information than the current feature makes possible," wrote McClendon. He added that the company would continue to explore additional avenues, while suggesting home-seekers make use of Google information showing directions, transit times, aerial and street views.

The internet has opened up a wealth of options for consumers seeking a new home to consider moving to. Reports last year showed 3-D technology is even being integrated into real estate websites to help give buyers a more faithful interpretation of how a home looks before even setting foot inside.
