Neighborhood characteristics are an important part of the moving process

February 8, 2010 - Individuals who are planning a move may want to consider getting to know their new neighborhood before they commit to a new home in the area.

Although real estate agents and research websites can give prospective residents a statistical overview of a particular area, there are certain characteristics that cannot be described in a numerical format.

The quality of schools is the most important consideration among families who are planning a move, Bankrate reports. Although schools' rankings can give parents a good idea of the caliber of schools in a given area, they may want to look into other factors that could impact their children's educational experience.

As working parents may not always be able to ensure their children arrive safely to and from school, some students may need to walk or take a bus. Consequently, the accessibility of a route to school and the average age of residents in a neighborhood can become important factors for some families.

In addition to exploring a home's proximity to schools, some individuals may want to explore the safety of a new area by researching the number of sex offenders who live nearby and activity in the area at multiple points during the day.
