Elizabeth Taylor's custom Cleopatra trailer for sale
December 14, 2011 - Curbed.com reports that Elizabeth Taylor's custom trailer is now being auctioned off and is estimated to go for somewhere between $50,000 to $75,000. Twentieth Century Fox reportedly spent $75,000 to make the trailer for Taylor while filming the 1963 film Cleopatra.
The trailer will be featured in Profiles in History's Icons of Hollywood Auction alongside other Hollywood items including a DeLoreon from Back to the Future and Marilyn Monroe's wedding ring. The film is best remembered for its over the top budget which includes the money spent building the 36-foot, Egyptian-themed dressing room.
According to the source, the Aljo trailer features hand-painted ceilings, murals in the bedrooms, crown moldings and columns mounted on the walls. After the film finished, a financier kept the trailer on his ranch and later gave it to a neighbor when he moved. The neighbor is the owner of a museum and used it as an exhibit, but sources report that it had more recently been used as a guesthouse.
The bed where Taylor slept is no longer in the trailer, says Curbed, but whoever is moving in will be surrounded by original items including furniture, fixtures and curtains.
