Brooke Astor's mansion finally set to sell

November 16, 2011 - Late philanthropist Brooke Astor's long-time Holly Hill home finally has a buyer. The home was originally listed in 2008 for $12.9 million but received a major price chop and has sold for less than $7.5 million.

Astor is best known for her philanthropic work with the Astor foundation and frequently donated to charities including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the New York public library and many others.

Astor's Park Avenue apartment just recently sold in early October, but also underwent a major drop in price. That home was originally listed for $46 million in 2008 and sold for just $21 million.

The 11,000-square-foot stone manor in New York has 27 bedrooms, along with the charm every home built in the 1920s has. Despite the somewhat dated decor, the home has a lot of potential and will most likely need some renovations.

Buyers may have been reluctant to purchase either home due to the current legal battle pending over the estate. Astor's son Anthony Marshall, 86, was convicted of stealing from her during the last years of her life. The agreement to sell the 65-acre property came after Marshall was convicted of grand larceny for taking $185 million of his mother's fortune.

Whoever purchased the home better have a lot of moving boxes to fill the enormous house.
